Last Thursday, Cothill House enjoyed its Senior Poetry Cup run by Mrs Crump and the English department. It is named the Thorneloe Cup in memory of a Cothill old boy - Lieutenant Colonel Rupert Thorneloe - who was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2009. It was a wonderful event showcasing the school's depth of talent and resourcefulness in tricky times. The quality of delivery was outstanding with a wide array of challenging and emotive poems on offer. Whilst the Removes were fortunate to spectate from the New Hall, the rest of the school were still lucky enough to tune in online from their classrooms via a live link.
All Finalists - Archie Vernon Miller, Freddie Hall, Liam Yu, Oscar Piney, Arthur Andrews, Johnny Moesel, Arthur Bland, Wisdom Edjejovwo, Conrad Mosimann and Bobby Moss - were exceptional. CEO of the Cothill Trust, Mr Tom Beardmore-Gray, kindly judged the competition. He was extremely impressed by the level on show and he awarded special mentions to Freddie Hall for his powerful rendition of The Tunnel by Brian Lee and to Johnny Moesel for his animated performance of The Destruction of Sennacherib by Lord Byron.
In the end, Arthur Bland was announced as the worthy winner for his compelling and humorous recital of Television by Roald Dahl. All boys duely received a box of chocolates for their participation!
Also, a video of the boys' poems can be accessed here (sorry to Archie V M - the video didn't quite start in time).
